Testing the Hypothesis, Pt. 1

The safety of bikers on the sides of roads.

Opportunity: There is an opportunity to help bikers realize that there are cars coming, and overall impact the safety of the bikers.

- Who: Bikers and possible walkers/ people getting around without cars
- What: Many bikers are unsafe and unaware as they bike down the road
- Why: Many bikers do not think about their surroundings while they are just trying to get from point A to point B, and there are safety concerns

Hypothesis

- Testing the who: There are probably many people that could need this new invention that I am not thinking of in my analysis. I chose to mainly focus on bikers, but there is a definite need in other fields of transportation as well.
- Testing the what: Many bikers are aware, so it is important to include both aware and non-aware bikers in my analysis. I am sure there not everyone feels like this is a need, because not everyone listens to music while they bike, but many people could use this product.
- Testing the why: Many bikers need to do more to ensure their safety as they are moving around. Although it should be their first priority, it is often not.

Interviews

- The first interview that I conducted was with a 12 year old boy. He frequently rides his bike around his neighborhood. He said on average, he probably uses his bike 5 times a week. This person said that they wear headphones or listen to music while they bike. This person said that they would definitely use these headphones while they bike.
- The second interview that I conducted was with an adult over the age of 50. They said on average, they probably use their bike twice a week. This person said that they do not wear headphones or listen to music while they bike. This person said that they would consider using these headphones while they bike.
- The next interview that I conducted was with an adult over the age of 30. They said on average, they probably use their bike once every other week. This person said that they do not wear headphones or listen to music while they bike. This person said that they would consider using these headphones while they bike, although they do not frequently bike.
- The next interview that I conducted was with an adult over the age of 40. They said on average, they probably use their bike 3 times a week. This person said that they do not wear headphones or listen to music while they bike. This person said that they would consider using these headphones while they bike.
- The last interview that I conducted was with a 20 year old college student. They said that they never use a bike and haven't in years. They would not use the headphones because they do not bike. They also do not currently use headphones.

What do I know about the opportunity that I did not know before?
- I now know that not everyone who I previously thought would use this invention will. I know that there is still a need for this invention, but I may not be able to branch out as much as I thought. I was unaware of how many people leave their ears open while biking. This decreases the need of my invention, although the opportunity definitely still exists.

  1. Hey Carlie,

I really like the opportunity you chose to exploit. As someone who bikes and walks around campus almost daily, safety is a huge issue for me as I sometimes feel unprotected on the sidewalk. I also like the diversity of the people in the interviews that you got. Obtaining both younger and older people give a better and more accurate representation of society.

  2. Hi Carlie,

I loved your opportunity! Being that my sibling got hit by a car while riding his bike, I am all for raising awareness and the safety concerns of riding bikes. Even then, on campus the bikers present a safety concern to students when they are riding extremely fast through Turlington and do not even bother to get off and walk the bike. On both ends it creates a hazard and I think it is important to be aware of your surroundings at all times.

  3. Hey Carlie,
I enjoyed reading about your opportunity about making bikers more conscious of their surroundings and how reckless driving may have an impact on themselves, pedestrians, or moving vehicles. As someone who bikes to campus and back home twice a day, I have both seen bikers not care who or what is in their path as long as they make it to class in time. I will admit that I am also guilty of this at times when I running late. It would have been cool to interview Jimmy Johns delivery bikers. I think they are very skilled bikers and extremely fast, but I have noticed them to be slightly reckless at times.
